Facts of the case from Gonzalez v. Raich:
• California passed the Compassionate Use Act of 1996 which allows seriously ill residents in the state to obtain access to marijuana for medical purposes only.
• Angel Raich and Diane Monson are residents of the state of California that suffer from different forms of serious medical conditions. They are self-medicating with marijuana using the terms of the Compassionate Use Act. The respondents have the recommendations from their licensed doctors to do so since the approved conventional medicines do not provide proper treatment for their conditions.
• Diane Monson grows her own marijuana. Angel Raich receives her marijuana from local growers for free.
