Greek culture had many diverse aspects. There were sections to Greece called Polis or city-states. They ranged in size from 2,500 square kilometers to 250 square kilometers. Greece was a type of country that was broken up into two main categories; salves, and free people. The free people typically owned the slaves and used them for work. Salves were used for labor work and servants; these slaves didn’t have any legal rights whatsoever. In some cases the slaves could have been war prisoners or even traded with foreign slave traders. These slaves were rarely paid and sometimes had no craftsmen abilities at all.
As the Athenian society changes the free men were divided up between citizens, and Metic. The citizens were the most powerful group because they were born by Athenian parents. This group was able to take part in the government of the Polis or city-states. After service in the army (that you had no choice about) you were expected to be a government official and be a jury official. A metic was a foreign birth that had eventually moved to Athens. The metics usually migrated to Athens to go trade or craftsmen work. Some metics were required to serve in the army but all were required to pay taxes. Although, they had those rights, they could never reach full citizenship and were not allowed to own land or a house. Also, they were never allowed to participate in government actions.
