Owning land is one of the major fundamental reasons why masses of immigrants abandoned their homes and lives in which ever county they are from to move to America in the 18th century. Yet when the immigrants came they were only given the option of certain areas in which they could live in, in order to preserve the culture of the people who were “American.” These Americans are classified as the desirables: white, Anglo-Saxon, and usually Protestant. In 1964, laws such as Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibits the discrimination of housing based on race, color, or national origin, people do not see the dislocation of the “undesirables” out of neighborhoods. Is it the hipster who move into an area can make it trendy? Is it the developers who are concerned with the bottom line they make? Is it the lawmakers who do not seem to care for the lower socioeconomically class? The cleaning of the canal is something that needs to occur because it is an environmental issue; however, there is an issue with how people are being shoved out of their homes. Each person, in America is supposed to have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Yet are people allowed to encroach on other’s rights in order to obtain the bottom line? It is interesting how people move to an area because they see the uniqueness of the neighborhood or the different colors of the neighborhood, yet when these people move in the people who gave color to the streets are then pushed out because they are no longer given the chance to afford to live there. In 1964 public segregation was suppose to be unlawful. Yet we are still able to draw lines to separate people based on socioeconomically standing. Although people can say that race and socioeconomically standings are different they are highly correlated, unfortunately. Although the canal must be cleaned, it is a misfortune that the neighborhood but gentrify because the people who live there are not the “desirables” in our society – that is an injustice to those being displaced and
