Illusion of Borders At the end of Grand Illusion, Lieutenant Maréchal and Lieutenant Rosenthal are traveling in Germany trying to reach the nearby border of Switzerland. As they are crossing a snow covered field, they are spotted by several German soldiers. The soldiers begin to fire at them, until they are told by their commander to stop, as Maréchal and Rosenthal had entered into Switzerland. Since they were in a different part of the field, indistinguishable from the surroundings, they were safe from being killed or captured. This image shows how borders are man-made and arbitrary. This mountainside is a portion of the Mexico-United States border. While digging the tunnel to escape, they had rigged up a can alarm system that was supposed to be alert them if the person digging was in trouble by falling to the floor, catching their attention. However, when the person digging attempted to use it, the can fell onto a blanket and the soldiers did not notice. They were relying on this communication to work for the safety of the digger and to maintain the secrecy of the escape plan, but it failed because of a simple mistake. This picture shows that many of the methods of distributing information to large numbers of people, such as television, newspapers, and the internet are full of fictitious news, leading to a failure for proper communication. People believe they are receiving accurate and truthful information in the news or media, but many times aspects of it are altered, biased, or even completely false. They are not being told the truth, which can impact the way they behave and respond; it can even break down the ability to successfully communicate with others.
