3. Stanza 1, Line 9 “Listen! you hear the granting roar”. With the first stanza, the speaker was creating an image for the reader; however the speaker is now creating sound. The exclamation being used in line 9 “Listen!” is to draw reader’s attention to the sound of the ocean. This sound effect implies that the calm atmosphere that was once created is now evolving to a “granting roar”. The “granting roar” of the sea suggests the idea of sadness to the speaker, therefore the sound of the poem is changing into a saddened atmosphere. It is apparent that the sound of the ocean crashing onto a pebbled beach gives off a rowdy and heavier roar than that of a sandy shore.
