The president is both head of government and head of the military, and can veto bills of Congress. The judiciary in the country is complicated, as each of the 50 states have different legal systems. America is a nation built on immigration, and consists of many ethnic groups. Democrats underwent a paradigm shift under President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his "New Deal" in the 1930s. This set aims to move away from laissez faire poltikken that had dominated US, nor give the federal government more responsibility for the individual's economic wellbeing. Since that time, this reform dominated Democratic politics, and traditionally has been an aim of improving the situation of minorities and vulnerable groups of society, through government intervention.
As with most other political parties on the left, the Democrats in recent decades moved more toward the political center as regards economic policy. This means more individual freedom, but with the federal government acting as a safety net for vulnerable sections of society. Barack Obama is the Democrats' 15th President, and he is in the company of including Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
