The Great Depression began in the fall of 1929 after the October stock market crash started the greatest economic downturn the United States has ever experienced. The Great Depression lasted until the late 1930s and the start of World War II. During these nearly 10 years, like many states, New Jersey suffered greatly. As the Depression settled in, industrial towns were especially hard hit and thousands of people lost their jobs. John A. Roebling Sons Company, Trenton’s biggest employer, asked people to reduce their hours by 50 percent in attempt to avoid layoffs (Guarino). In Morris County, the Warren Foundry and Pipe Company, a large employer who operated one of the two remaining mines in the county, pushed a 10 percent reduction in wages
