A cotton cloth was used for cleaning windows, shoe shining, scrub and wax floors, etc. They can turn something so useless into the thing that saves them that extra dollar. The burlap bags could be made into washcloths or even curtains. Every paper bag was saved for a school lunch or even wrapping paper.
They would find someone a year older than him to buy their old school books off of them. The only exception was a spelling book which was used for all eight years so that was the only one they really bought. The ice around there they could buy half a twenty-five pound block of ice which they would put under a place outside that dripped so it would grow. They had to plant and hope for rain because they can’t make it rain and they didn’t have enough money to buy the waterers we have for the fields. Farmers in the great depression tried their hardest to stay true to their job. They get nervous every time they have to plant because it can either be a good year or a bad year. In “Debts” the farmer gets very nervous because it hasn’t rained enough in three years to plant crops and have them grow successfully. He gets so mad about his wife not having faith in him as a farmer so he goes outside so they don’t fight. But he has hope and that’s all the farmers in the great depression needed.
In “The New Deal” they are talking about how they made a new system to help people make money again. President Roosevelt was the president at the time so he had to help the people be happy and wealthy. That was hard because, it was a great depression and no one was satisfied until they had their money back. You can’t expect people to be happy when you are taking away everything they ever knew. The banks took away peoples home because they couldn’t pay off the debts because they took all their money and then the stock market
