First, Basketball in the 1920s and The Great Gatsby are both great examples of how prosperous the United States was in the 1920s. This is clearly evident from Gatsby and Tom’s huge waterfront mansions where extravagant dinners and parties are held, and from how basketball had a surge in popularity over the time period. In fact, basketball became so popular that the game was outlawed in YMCA gyms because the game had monopolized the gyms (“Basketball”). In the 1920s, people had time to spare due to the influx of wealth, and while some threw huge prohibition-era parties, others indulged in basketball and even began to form professional leagues.
