Nature and natural phenomena play an important and strong role during the creation stories. Maheo used nature for good to reward and create a beautiful earth for his people to live on. It also explains why the turtle moves so slowly, due to it holding the weight of the world on its shoulders. “Grandmother Turtle must walk slow, for she carries the whole weight of the whole weight and all it’s people on her back” (Cheyanne 13). In “The Beginning” the evolution of the snake is also explained. After the serpent tricked mankind, God banished him to the ground to crawl on the ground and eat dirt the rest of his life. “You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life” (Genesis 3: 14) This is very much like how a snake crawls and slithers on the ground sneaking around all the time.

The Heart of the Sky created people used monkeys as a sign to created humans. “So this is why monkeys look like people, they are a sign of previous human work” (Mayan 20). Humans evolved from monkey in the Mayan story, but the Greek gods believe they gave man the ability to walk and stand upright. After all the good characteristics were taken up by the gods, the greek god Prometheus gave humans the right to walk upright, meaning they did not evolve from monkeys. The way humans walk and how they evolved is one of the most complicated questions in all the creations
