The affect that the weather has on his feelings also represents how much outside- forces effect Gregor, therefore symbolizing a sense of a loss of control. Gregor did not choose whether or not he wanted to become some sort of bug, it just happened. Similarly, Gregor does not choose to feel sad in correlation with the weather, but due to his lack of control of outside forces he became sad along with the dreary weather.

Despite previously wanting to remain locked in his bedroom, he is now desperately trying to find a way to unlock his bedroom door and reveal himself. In this quote, the audience can feel his desire to be accepted by his family and office manager, and it seems to go deeper than just his new body. For Gregor, it is possible that his desire to be accepted by his family and office manager was in him long before he was transformed into a vermin.
This desire to be accepted is also more than just wanting to be accepted by the people who are important to him; Gregor wants to accept himself. The only way for Gregor to acknowledge any self-worth is by gaining the approval of others. Without the approval of the people most important to him, Gregor cannot truly feel good about himself.
