Anchor 1: We apologize for interrupting today’s regularly scheduled television programming but we have breaking news about a potential union riot at Haymarket Square in Chicago. Anchor 2: There have been reports of a labor protest rally near Chicago’s
Haymarket Square that has turned into a riot after someone threw a bomb at police. Anchor 1: We have received reports that there have been fatalities. We will send it down to our InField Reporter in Chicago. InField Reporter: Hi ____________________, I am in Haymarket Square surrounded by chaos as events have certainly escalated. Originally this was to be a peaceful demonstration of workers aimed at improving working conditions in the local steel mills, where laborers were forced to work extremely long hours with short breaks for minimal pay making steel harvesting machines for the McCormick company. I have a worker here who has been present during the conflict. Can you tell us what’s happened? Witness: Yeah, yesterday we left work as an organized strike, and while we were peacefully protesting, the guards hired by Mr. Frick and Mr. Carnegie attacked us and began to beat us up. We found out this morning that one guy died, so we came back to continue our protest today.
Reporter: So then what happened? Witness: Well, we were here demonstrating today and out of nowhere there was an explosion and people started running and fighting and throwing things everywhere. It got real crazy out of nowhere. Things were going fine and then people started getting really hurt. I think someone died. Reporter: Why is this demonstration even taking place? What are the issues the workers have been complaining about? Witness: We all work at Mr. Carnegie’s Homestead Steel plant and have been forced to work really long hours in dirty crowded factories. We barely get paid and guys get hurt all the time. Mr. Frick, our boss, is really mean.
Not long ago a friend of mine lost his arm when a steel beam fell on him and
Mr. Frick fired him with no money and support for his family. We finally had enough so we decided that we would stop working and demonstrate. Reporter: So why did the situation escalate? Witness: There was no problem until the Pinkerton officers (who are like fake soldiers with guns) started getting physical with us, and then a bomb exploded and people were running all over the place. Reporter: Wow, thank you for your time. Please be careful. So you heard it
