Biblical Viewpoint on Gun Control Throughout the history of the Bible, self defense has never been looked down upon, but rather encouraged. In fact, in the book of Matthew, Peter, who was with Jesus, pulls out his sword (ESV, Matthew 26:52). Had Jesus been strictly against weapons, his disciples would not have had them, especially in his presence. Wayne Grudem writes, "If Jesus encourages his disciples to carry a sword to protect themselves, then it seems to me that it is also morally right for a person to be able to use other kinds of weapons for self defense (Grudem, 2010)." Jesus allows his followers to carry swords for their own protection, therefore relating this to a modern day setting would be the permission for his followers
