Gun Violence Critique Gun violence is a lingering threat in the United States. Enormous amounts of deaths and injuries have accumulated from guns. Being a public school student, this is a very real topic for me considering the number of school shootings that have happened in the past year. I decided that I wanted to do some more research on gun violence, so I chose this article to tie into our current CGA unit. The article goes over lots of statistics and proven facts to show the severity of the violence going on in our country and the steps we need to take as a nation to fix these global issues. More Americans will die of gun-related injuries in 2021 than in any other year on record, according to the CDC. This includes gun murders as well as gun suicides. The article titled “What This Week's Mass Shooting Can Teach Us About School Safety” concerns the school shooting in Oxford, Michigan in 2021. Where four students were killed when a 15-year-old sophomore opened fire in the high school. It was the deadliest incident in the US since 2018. This article just proves that something needs to be done about the gun crisis in the United States. From 2018-2021, 124 people were killed and 338 were injured in school shootings. People are beginning to wonder if arming teachers will help resolve the issue or make it 10x worse. Finally, the last in-class resource I used was the chart of all the mass shootings in 2024 so far. A “mass shooting” is considered to be a violent crime where 1 or more attackers kill or injure multiple individuals using a firearm. We are not even 4 months into 2024 and there are already 5 full pages of shootings. It is a growing problem and nothing is being done to resolve it.
