Chapter 1: One day a ship came to coral cove and a tall man with a blonde beard came ashore. Chief Chowig greeted him and exchanged names. The man’s name was Captain Orlov. He and his crew, the Aleuts, came from another island to hunt otter. The deal they made was they would hunter otter and repay the tribe with jewelry and gifts. After watching from a cliff above, Karana returned to her village. Chapter 2: Even though Chowig made the deal he doesn’t trust Captain Orlov. He sends men to spy on their camp and report the news to him. One day Karana sister, Ulape, finds a group of white bass close to shore. Calling all the women, they collected the fish and had a feast that night. The next day some of Orlov’s men came and asked Chowig for fish. He sends them away angry and disappointed. Chapter 3: Still hunting for otter, Chowig’s men count the number of otter killed each day. But one day Captain Orlov seems to be packing up his camp without paying his debts. The tribe waited on the command from Chowig who was finishing up a new spear.
Chapter 4: Leaving without paying their debts, Chowig stops them. Captain Orlov says that their gifts are on the ship and that he needs to go get them. Then she used bull kelp to tie the ribs together and let it dry. For her entrance of her house she dug out a tunnel underneath and lined it with stones. For the covering she wove a bush together and set it at the front. For inside the house she placed a flat rock to help keep the wind out. She made the roof of her house and once she was finished winter was half way over. Having to make newer and stronger weapons, she would have to get a sea elephants tooth and use that as the spear head.
