History is a complex subject that often does not have concrete answers. History is based on interpretation, not solely on dates and facts. History unfolds not just through facts, but through the lenses of those who analyze them. The idea that history is solely about dates and facts is very common among people outside of the discipline. Though, I will be focusing on HIST 200: Introduction to History and Historical Methods with Dr. DeSilva and HIST 201: American History, 1492-1876 with Dr. Stephan. This wide range of evidence allowed the class to move through time. One of the primary sources we used were maps and census data. These offered valuable insights into the geographical and demographic landscapes of historical periods. During the Notable Women of Muncie Project, we used maps to emphasise change as later maps did not have the same features as previous maps showed. Initially, historical maps only provided a snapshot of a particular moment in time, capturing the geopolitical boundaries, land features, and spatial relationships of a given period. By comparing maps from different historical periods, historians can visually trace shifts in borders, territorial expansions or contractions, and changes in political and administrative divisions. The evolution of map making techniques and advancements in geographic knowledge are also evident in historical maps. For instance, changes in map scales and symbols reflect not only improvements in map making technology but also evolving understandings of geography and spatial representation over time. By comparing census data from different years, historians can see how populations have changed over time. For example, they can track increases or decreases in population size, shifts in demographics like age or ethnicity, and changes in where people live, such as urbanization or migration patterns.
