The church offered a program where it was both safe but fun for families in the community to come out and celebrate Halloween. They set up games, crafts, other activities and of course gave out candy. This church is in a community that is experiences more food insecurity than others. They often offer dinners after church, food drives, etc. for those in need within the church and outside as well. This Halloween celebration, as it was geared towards children, once again opened my eyes to the things that I/we seem to always take advantage of because of our privileges. I personally never celebrated Halloween before I got to college, however, the opportunity to get candy was there. My mom often went to buy us candy the day after Halloween when it was on sale. At the church Friday night, there were many times where the kids were of course excited and seemed to have experienced a Halloween celebration before, however, I did come across a few kids that had never celebrated before almost always because they couldn’t afford a costume, or for other personal reasons. For a minute there I thought it would be exactly that, I would just be the role of the helper instead of the participant, however, I actually was able to grow from this experience. I once again felt very privileged. I may not be the most privileged but I knew that at their age I was able to get Halloween candy if I wanted it; meaning my mom bought it for us the day after. In all honesty, I am not sure that anyone else there really got to see what I saw. I believe that I saw this behavior as this class has been given me the opportunity to think of others before I think of myself a bit more, especially in situations like this and in volunteering aspects. This was an important moment in realizing how food insecurity effects children, and that there are specific times of the year where the effect could weigh more heavily on them. This take away from this was definitely seeing all the children happy and being able to enjoy one night, where they hopefully were not thinking about the fact that they may not have had lunch that day or that they are often hungry, etc. because of food
