As quoted by Martin Luther King Jr., an infamous civil rights activist and reverend, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Throughout human history, several laws, orders, and social rules have been put in place to keep people in line and prevent chaos and violence. Ancient codes, such as the Code of Ur-Nammu and Hammburabi’s code, were written thousands of years ago with the noble goal of having people act appropriately and not harm others or do other harmful or obscene acts (Mark). Additionally, these codes aimed to somewhat make people equal under the law. This is best shown by the phrase “Eye for an Eye,” one of the most famous laws from Hammurabi’s Code. For example, the anti-vaccine movement in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic lacks historical, legal, or philosophical legitimacy (Chai et al.). This differs from the Vaccine Revolt of 1904, where citizens’ distrust of vaccines generally came from a lack of information provided to them. Therefore, the movement is purely political as it lacks legitimate justification for its existence, unlike past movements. Although this does not invalidate the existence of the movement, it means that any laws broken by protestors for this movement lack valid justification. During the civil rights movement, many churches supported the movement, and many church members, like Martin Luther King Jr., were directly involved. However, churches are now skeptical and critical of the Black Lives Matter movement due to some of the violence associated with the movement (Napieraa). This violent and unorganized behavior cannot be justified or categorized as civil disobedience. True civil disobedience is rooted purely in moral and ethical principles, and any actions that deviate from this cannot be justified by civil disobedience and are instead just disobedience. Although this does not negate the fact that the Black Lives Matter movement is a movement protesting for human rights, it means that not all of the actions taken by protestors on behalf of the movement, such as the destruction of property, can be justified as helping to advance human
