According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, madness is defined as severe mental illness or behavior that is very foolish or dangerous. By this definition, one can easily argue that Hamlet and Ophelia were indeed mad. However, after reading the entire play, it leaves a doubt in the reader’s mind about Hamlet’s state of mind. Could he be pretending?
Hamlet himself questions his sanity throughout the paly. After his ghostly encounter with his dead father, he makes a conscious decision to pretend to be mad by saying, “As I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on.” (Shakespeare 28). During this time, Hamlet seems to be in control but his sanity became questionable during an encounter
