Dr. Lecter is a brilliant forensic psychiatrist. At the end of Thomas Harris’s book, Red Dragon (1981), Hannibal Lecter is put into the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane for his crimes. During his time at the asylum, many Doctors came to profile him. Since he knew how the tests worked, he could easily come up with the typical answers that would brand him as not being psychologically disturbed. He mocked the psychiatrists' attempts to profile him by folding their tests into origami. While being given a routine exam, he ate a nurses tongue clean out. His pulse never got over eighty three. The cycle of getting answers and receiving them becomes an interesting focal point in the book. Starling must prove to Hannibal that her mind is apt able enough to be filled and teased by the Doctor. She must think for herself; he only offers cryptic answers that she must use in order to reveal the killer. Hannibal Lecter is a polite, even avuncular presence, in Clarice's mind as she searches for Buffalo Bill. Clarice solves the problem of Buffalo Bill’s identity by looking to the results of his actions. The victims leave a cookie crumb trail and she deduces why he takes their skin. Buffalo Bill, later revealed to be Jame Gumb, kidnaps a famous senator's daughter, Catherine. This adds more pressure for Clarice to find Bill.
