Although Hanukkah is classified as a minor festival in Judaism, it is one of the most popular Jewish celebrations in Europe and the United States. Its roots can be traced back to the second century B.C., beginning with Judah Maccabee’s victory over the Greek/Syrian. Like most Jewish celebrations, Hanukkah has many traditions that have lasted thousands of years. However, over time, these traditions have changed and adapted to modern society. Hanukkah, while not a major festival in Judaism, has developed into a holiday that most households in the US, and around the world, are aware of. Hanukkah’s story began in approximately 200 B.C., when Antiochus III gained control over Judea, or the Land of Israel. Jews living there continued to practice their religion peacefully until his son, Antiochus IV, gained authority and outlawed their religion, forcing them to conform to Greek religion. As a result of this order, Jerusalem was invaded by his soldiers, who committed many great crimes against the Jews. It is more widely celebrated because it falls during the winter holiday season, but in 2013, it overlapped Thanksgiving, which led a manufacturer to produce a menorah that is topped by a turkey. However, some more permanent changes that have been applied to this Jewish celebration include using candles for the lights, rather than olive oil- although some of most the devout still practice this. On the other hand, some even consider using electric lights instead . One of the larger adjustments is the custom of giving gifts to children. This is thought to have come from Christmas, which often falls around the same time. Although Hanukkah has picked up many new traditions or changed over time, its foundation is still
