Hard Bop distinguishes two functions Funky Jazz (relatively simple) and Mainstream Jazz (more complex).The term of “Hard Bop” was coined in the middle 1950’s by jazz pianist-teacher-scholar John Mehegan. Hard Bop is an extension/ evolution of 1940s Bebop style and ideals. It refers to the music of Jazz musicians who followed the Bebop era; people like Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie (Trumpet). Hard Bop was able to distinguish there style form Bebop, by producing hard sounds and develop new techniques. Some of the most important jazz musicians included Cannonball Adderley (Saxophonist), Art Blakey (Piano), John Coltrane (Tenor & Soprano Saxophone), Sonny Rollins (Saxophonist), and Horace Silver (Pianist). The music of style broke new ground through their innovations. Horace Silver was a big name in Hard Bop. “Because of his outstanding work as a composer and bandleader” (Gridley,
