Harriet Elisabeth Beecher Stowe was born June 14, 1811 in Litchfield, Connecticut. She was the seventh of nine children. Her parents were Rev. Lyman Beecher and Roxanna Foote. Harriet’s mother Roxanna died when she was three. Her father remarried to Harriet Porter when she was six. With that marriage, Harriet had three more siblings, two boys and a girl.
She attended Sarah Pierce’s Litchfield Academy, which was founded and run by her sister Catharine. It gave her a traditional women’s education.
