While traveling through the Underground Railroad, slaves faced many obstacles that they had to hurdle. For instance, Harriet Tubman had to travel 120 miles to make to Philadelphia for freedom, but she also traversed through menacing swamps and forests rather than clean, flat land (Tarshis 8). As the Underground Railroad came to be, there were even more obstacles due to the number of people traveling. As Lauren Tarshis states on page 9 of her article, “Escape From Slavery”, “Everyone working in the Underground Railroad took enormous risks… helping a runaway slave was against the law” (Tarshis ().
