Throughout the years of the 1800s there were many prominent African Americans. The one that caught my eyes with courage and still an important figure today in times. Harriet Tubman, born Araminta Ross in Maryland into slavery between 1815 and 1825. Tubman later escaped slavery and changed her name. She became a fearless individual whom seem to have put herself in danger for the cause of the underground railroad. So what was Harriet Tubman purpose of the underground railroad? What else is Harriet well-known for?

Harriet Tubman had a barbarous childhood. Being born into slavery there would be mistreatment. By that she experienced to have a fractured skull, that was deadly almost killing her. Which resulted in how she started to carry herself later in life. Before escaping slavery, Tubman changed her name. Tubman refused to be oppressed any longer as in the article "Who was Harriet Tubman?" stated "she refused to live in under the oppression of slavery and found the courage to liberate herself and those she loved." The underground railroad fell in place for the missions she wished to carry out. The underground railroad was a establishment of safe routes and secret houses. Tubman sold the soldiers root beer, pie and ginger bread. Overlooked them to make sure that they were okay. Tubman lead three Union gunboats in the 1863 Combahee River Raid that set 700 slaves free.
