Harry as a Christ Figure A Christ Figure is a character that resembles the story of Christ’s journey on Earth, and carries similar qualities, however they are always flawed as only Christ is perfect. Harry Potter is a Christ Figure. Even before his birth, Harry was included in a prophesy which said he would defeat the Dark Lord. Similarly, Christ’s birth was prophesied throughout the Old Testament. Christ was the chosen one to atone for our sins, while Harry was the chosen one to defeat the dark wizards. Both Christ and Harry are hidden away as children, Harry from the wizarding world, and Christ from the Roman Empire. Resemblances between Potter and Christ are found countless times throughout the series. Just as Christ was tempted by the Devil, Harry is tempted by Voldemort. When Voldemort realizes his connection with Harry, he uses this to give Harry nightmares. The nightmares show Harry on the dark side, Voldemort showing him how powerful he could become. Many use this quote by Sirius Black likening it to Free Will to choose God, which is a concept hotly debated among Christians. The focus of Sirius’ quote is the light and dark, or the good and the evil inside all of us. Just like Christianity teaches us that we are all sinners, Sirius tells Harry that he has darkness inside him, and is capable of giving into the darkness. As Christians, we can give into sin or work to combat the darkness inside us, and in the world through the work of the Holy Spirit in us. Ultimately, the Bible, as well as Rowling’s series, is about a battle between Good and Evil. Reading through both these stories, Good triumphs in the
