Hate speech. It is a highly debated topic in America today. One side saying that freedom of speech is protected by the constitution and that right should be conserved. The other side says that hate speech is a weapon that kills and mentally harms adults and children alike. 42% of teens in America are cyberbullied (Laird, 2012). With a number so high it’s hard to believe that there has been little change in the USA. In fact, the amount of hate speech has increased because of the internet and social media. This essay will discuss both viewpoints on hate speech, the cases that helped shape the discussion on hate speech, foreign policies to cure it, and the writer’s personal views on hate speech. I asked her when she was first affected by it. She replied that her being a woman of color, she can’t even remember because it has always been a part of her life (Anonymous, 2018).
