The novel’s protagonist, Hazel Grace Lancaster, has thyroid cancer that had spread through her lungs making her have an oxygen tank. She reads the same book over and over , "An Imperial Affliction", and is somewhat depressed because she knows that she is going to die. Hazel is homeschooled and much advanced for her age education wise. She doesn’t leave the house much and her best friends are her parents. Hazel falls in love with Augustus Waters and he somewhat brings her out of her shell. The love of Hazel’s life, Augustus Waters, is also a cancer patient.
