I. History of Tuberculosis
A. Arguments about origination time and place of tuberculosis (TB) varies three to nine million years
B. 1800’s called “phthosis” and “consumption “ and thought to be a “romantic disease
1. Affected more upper middle class females and many people of the arts like Edgar Allen Poe, John Keats, Emily Bronte, and Chopin
2. Thought to have many causes such as certain foods, genetics, swimming pools and coal mines
3. 1882 Robert Koch identified the tuberculosis bacillus as a contagious disease and convinced public health community to act accordingly
C. 1900’s referred to TB as the “white plague” and treatment was to admit patients to a sanatorium 1. 1944 antibiotic treatment discovered
2. Sanatoriums closed and effective health measures with antibiotic treatment seriously decreased TB in the US
3. TB vaccinations were given beginning in the late 1950s and almost eradicated the disease by the 1970’s
4. 1985 TB increased thought due because of HIV and the immunocompromised 5. Affects more low class to middle class males
D. Statistics show death rates drop from 194.4 per 100,000 in 1900 to 0.2 per 100,000 in 2005. E. 2011 Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports 10,528 cases of TB in the US 1. TB has killed more people than any other disease
2. The CDC and Word Health Organization (WHO) statistics show that one third of the world population has TB at this time.
