The Health and Care Professions Council (HPCP) is a regulatory authority. Their main goal is to ensure that people who are practicing as biomedical scientists (and people in other fields such as physiotherapists, dieticians, etc.) follow certain guidelines and meet certain standards that make them fit to practice only in a field in which they have a qualification. This way the HPCP ensures the quality of work and therefore care that citizens receive. The HCPC can stop any physician in the UK from practicing if they aren’t approved and registered or aren’t meeting the needed standards (Figure 1a).
