Health Disparities in Low-income neighborhoods
According to The Public Health Approach, the author David Satcher states,
“Determinants of health are environment, biology and genetics, and human behavior.” I believe this means that human biology relates to health disparities. Living in poor environment such as a low-income neighborhood leads to more risk of getting chronic heart diseases, Type II Diabetes and obesity. These neighborhoods are affected by “food deserts” meaning there are not a lot of options to buy nutritious and healthy food in these neighborhoods, compared to middle and upper class neighborhoods that do. Research shows that death rates from heart disease are 2-3times higher in low-income minorities than middle

By reading both of their articles, it is evident that the African American populations in the United States are more affected by health disparities compared to other races. In Palaniappan’s article, results showed that African Americans had highest standardized death rates within men and women, and in Satcher’s article he states, “Today, an African American baby born in the United States is 2.5 times more likely to die before his or her first birthday than his or her White counterparts.” The sample size that these researchers used makes this study more credible and increases the accuracy of the results. Palaniappan used people of different ethnicities and ages within California, and Satcher observed communities who face health issues around the United States. By doing this it helps set out awareness for other researchers to help African Americans around the nation, since they are more likely to be affected by …show more content…
Majority of the people he observed are hispanics and African Americans, so he wasn’t really able to get information of other races within the low-income neighborhood because not much other races reside there. There are no biases, since Palaniappan studied different ethnicities, genders and ages, there won’t be a bias and she won’t skew the results, because that’ll defeat the purpose of her study. For Satcher, his main goal of his research is to find preventative strategies to help those who suffer from health disparities so there shouldn’t be a bias for his research as well because all he’s trying to do is help communities. The subjects of both of this research are lower income people affected by health disparities and people of different ethnicities, ages, and genders. Having different demographic groups helps the study and gives the audience an idea of why health issues like CHD affect certain groups over other, and they find out it is due to lack of healthcare and environment certain ethnicities live
