Health information management is an allied health profession that is responsible for ensuring the availability, accuracy, and protection of the clinical information that is needed to deliver healthcare services and to make appropriate healthcare related decisions.
A career in HIM and HIT is one of many great professions to be a part of, when I was 17 (2010) I’ve decided to make HIM a career. When I volunteered at the local hospital the HIM department consisted of two discharge analyzers, 3 outpatient coders 2 inpatient coders, 5 medical records clerks, 2 transcriptionist and 1 correspondence clerk. Today the department has 9 coders 5 outpatient, 4 inpatient, 4 discharge analyzers, 1 transcriptionists, 5 clerks, 3 scanners and 1 correspondence clerk. Because of the EHR implementation there is a need for more staff to help get the electronic health record fully functioning. Below is proof that the HIM profession is growing. Back then physician’s disliked documenting, therefore; the medical record mainly consisted of nurses’ notes. If physicians disliked charting and doing any other types of documenting the records were most likely deficient. Today if a provider doesn’t sign off on a note even if it was just a nurses visit, at some health care facilities a physician’s signature if often required without a signature the record is considered incomplete.
