Is this generation of young kids destined to live in an obese America? Is this country supposed to watch these kids become the first generation to have a shorter lifespan than the previous one? These are two big questions that many people are asking. According to an article titled Reason for Healthier School Lunches (which contains information from Scholastic.com), it states, “Learning information depletes the brain's supply of glucose, according to Scholastic.com. Therefore, it is important to refuel children's glucose supplies with a healthy lunch. Scholastic.com suggests whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean sources of protein. A healthy lunch can give children the energy they need to stay focused, pay attention in class, and learn the information presented to them in their classes after lunchtime.” The problem is, if schools do not get more nutritious food, kids will have …show more content…
Well, there are two solutions to that. The first idea would be that the cost of lunch would be higher, which is not the best concept because, going back to the people who cannot afford as much, would defeat the purpose of the first reason. Another solution is self-solving. Prisoners get around the same amount of calories as children, but they get much more fruits and vegetables. The cost of the average Florida prisoner’s lunch is about $2.42, while the cost of a cafeteria lunch is about $8.12. If prison food was given to students, it would be healthier and cheaper. As you can see, due to families that cannot afford good food, future habits of children, and the academic success of students, school lunches should have a much higher nutrition level than they do now.
