Pathos is used to evoke emotional responses from an audience. Advertisers utilize ethos to reinforce the credibility of an advertisement. Presenting statistics and facts is the application of logos. The HealthWell Foundation’s forums and advertisements are great examples of how rhetorical devices can be used to influence an audience. HealthWell heavily uses pathos to appeal to people’s emotions, with the hope that they will be tempted to donate. The use of ethos on HealthWell’s website, newsletter, and videos helps them verify the credibility of the foundation. Their website mentions that they have a 4-star charity navigator rating. They are also ranked number 23 in the 2023 Forbes list of America’s Top 100 Charities. These ratings and rankings from trusted sources make the foundation seem honorable. Ad one is about a girl with asthma who received a grant from HealthWell. This grant made it possible for her father to afford her asthma medication. When people see how the foundation helped someone, it makes them seem more trustworthy. HealthWell also discloses many of their accomplishments in ad two, “Celebrating 20 Years of Help”. Healing, and Hope,” which is hosted by their CEO and President, Krista Zodet. The foundation’s use of ethos is a great way to show people that HealthWell is an efficient and honorable organization, but it is not the only way to gain possible donors’ trust.
