Nearly one out of one hundred children are born with heart murmurs. Congenital heart defects are America’s number one birth defect. Each year 40,000 babies are born with a congenital heart defect. Most of them will not reach adulthood, while others will not even make it to their first birthday. Thus, making this disease very important in American society. Throughout my research, I will explain to you the history of a heart murmur, what it is, how it can be treated, how they are diagnosed, what causes a heart murmur, and how they can be prevented.
History of heart murmurs
Even before the creation of auscultation and percussion, physicians from the 1700’s were able to detect abnormalities in patient’s heart by palpation and by assessing the pulse. Holes can appear in the heart, they may not be serious, depending on the size and location. But should still be checked by a doctor in case the heart is at risk. Congenital heart valve abnormalities are present at birth. Some examples include valves that don’t allow enough blood through them, or those that do not close properly and leak. Heart murmurs affect the heart in many different ways, only those who get the proper treatments and surgical procedures will have a long, healthy life.
How can heart murmurs be treated
A congenital heart murmur can be treated in various ways, depending on how severe it is. If it is structurally damaged, it will need to be surgically replaced or repaired. This operation will cause the heart to function properly after it has been treated.
