Throughout my studies in Counseling Lab this semester, I gained more direction in my career and academic goals, learned from observing counselors use the skills and techniques I studies over the past few years, and gained additional knowledge and insight in the readings assigned from the Heart of Counseling and The Gifts of Imperfection. Through our observations, I saw how a formal counseling agency starts and terminates clients. Observed clients with a vast variety of backgrounds, and different types of life situations and issues. Teaching me what it looks like to work with several different people all in one day. The text provided useful information on any and all aspects of the counseling process. From working with clients who idealize suicide to working with clients in different situations, and how to have hard conversations. In The Gifts of Imperfection gives guidance as to how to live well in one’s life, no matter what area of work that will look like for someone. In many situations, we think if we get the degree, get the job, and get the partner we will thrive in this life. When on fact if we place expectations on things and people to make us whole, we will always face disappointment. But once we take the time to create rest, play, and meaningful work into our lives, we can find much more satisfaction in that. This book really challenged me, and I appreciated Berne Brown’s perspective from both as an expert in her field and her own real life experiences in uncovering true and raw meaning in her own life. Through her work as a researchers does provide her facts with validity, but her own personal experiences make it all the more relatable. The culture of America is achievement driven along with the fact that I am a goal and task oriented person, makes it hard for me to want to do nothing. In some sessions counselors and clients discussed their relationship with God, how they viewed God, and how some of their coping skills included reading certain passages, or praying and listening to different worship songs if clients started to feel upset outside of session, and needed to use items from their toolbox.
