As I read through the first third of The Night Circus, I found myself intrigued by the characters in the story. My impression of Hector Bowen, or Prospero the Enchanter, was that although he is extremely talented, he lacks empathy and is very controlling of his daughter. He is a dictator, meticulously drilling and disciplining Celia to the point of exhaustion and injury. I completely disagree with the way he teaches Celia; he scares her by killing a dove in order to inspire her to “learn her limitations and overcome them.” I can’t help but wonder why he follows this method of psychological manipulation, especially for someone as young as Celia. Compared to Hector Bowen’s strict teaching style, Mr. A. H-’s teaching methods are on opposite side
