For the last twenty years, Jane and I have directed the Chi Alpha ministry at the University of Texas at Arlington. We have experienced great fruit over the years, but without consistent staff our role has grown more diverse each year, including responsibilities with Chi Alpha beyond our local campus. Two years ago, God began to move in our hearts that our time here was closing, however, God revealed no clear path forward. But, as we continued to pray and seek godly counsel, God gave us one word “Focus.”

For example, I recognize I need to lose weight however if I am unwilling to adjust my eating habits the problem will remain no matter how much I exercise. The same is true with create a focused hedgehog concept in the future. Currently, I see the problem and understand the solution, now is the time to make applicable changes.
The first step toward a freer, hedgehog future is to begin with a personal hedgehog concept. Often, we discuss mission, vision and values in terms of organizations and businesses, however, Collins (2001) suggests that effective leaders, Level 5 Leaders, live according to a personal mission, vision, and set of values. For most in leadership, the problem is not that they have no mission or vision but that it is too ambiguous to communicate clearly. Like those we lead and desire to motivate, we need to understand the purpose our lives and our actions have (Adair, 2009).
