Up until the last decade or so, woman have always been judged by their looks and their beauty; very rarely were woman inventors or engineers and even less likely to attend college. Hedy Lamarr was one of these rare ones. She was beautiful and smart, she was the whole package some would say. Woman then and still today aspire to be how she was in many ways, by being intelligent, beautiful and being able to defy the odds of the norms. Lamarrs life began rolling when she starred in the movie Ecstasy, which was about a neglected young wife married to an older man. This film was known for showing Lamarrs face during an orgasm as well as a brief nudity scene. This scene was one of the first ever for Hollywood. These dinners were where she learned about the field of applied sciences which nurtured her talent and love of science. She starred in films such as Boom Town, White Cargo and Algiers; she was now known for being the most beautiful woman in the world (Source 3). A quote of her says it all, "Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid” (Source 1). During her new life in Hollywood, she had a neighbor, George Antheil, who experimented with automated controls of musical instruments. Lamarr and Antheil later developed the idea of using frequency hopping to avoid jamming.
