Helena Laarsen, freshman at Sierra Nevada High School, is probably the shyest girl you'll ever know. She walks around staring at the ground with her arms wrapped around her body as if she were trying to hide from demons. But let's face it, teenagers are demons, in their own special way.

Her story starts on her first day of P.E. She steps out timidly in a bikini; the top is a bright neon orange and the bottoms are a soothing black. Ignoring all the imagined stares, she tiptoes over to the bleachers and sits in her roll-call line.

Once everyone is settled in, Mr. Greever, the P.E. coach, says, "Alright, welcome to the swim unit. Today is game day, which means that tomorrow is a make-up day, but since you all have nothing to make up, you'll have a

Mr. Greever ignores the mixed reactions and takes roll. After he's done, he sets up the games.

The girls and boys go to separate ends of the pool, and since the class is so big, the games are girls versus girls and boys versus boys. The nets are set up on either side of the pool. Helena stares longingly at the shimmering pool water.

"Okay, everyone. Go ahead and get into the pool," Mr. Greever says with two yellow water polo balls in his hands.

The boys jump straight in, but the girls sluggishly crawl into the pool and complain about getting their hair wet. Helena, however, follows the boys' lead and dives into the chill water. She rises to the surface, and her hair, normally a coffee bean brown, is now a night-sky black.

"Hey, do you want to be goalie with me?" a girl with icy blue eyes says.

"Okay!" Helena says nervously.

The two girls swim over to one of the goals and prepare to be goalies. The ball is thrown into the water, and a few girls thrash towards the yellow orb. The ball goes sailing through the air, and before Helena can react, it hits her face with vicious power, making her see a brilliant, white
