Helicopter parents have a negative effect on a child’s development. “Helicopter parents typically take too much responsibility for their children’s experiences and, specifically, their successes or failures.” (Carolyn Daitch, Ph.D.) Most parents who do helicopter parent, defend themselves by saying they are just helping their children be successful and have a good future. When really they are “being involved in a child’s life in a way that is over controlling, overprotective, and over perfecting [...] in excess of responsible parenting.” (Dr. Dunnewold) They can control their children to the point of denial, or breaking down. These kids may not have the full ability to be independent on their own. They may be lost and need their mother’s/father’s help. Helicopter Parenting can cause problems mentally and emotionally for the child. This will impact their wellbeing and self-esteem for themselves which will impact the next point I’ll make. Your child will make less money and not be successful in the long run. These kids may not be have the ability to be independent on their own. When they become independent in our society, they may most likely not know how to care for themselves independently. This can cause low self-esteem, having low self esteem as a child can have serious consequences in adulthood-including your child’s ability to support him/herself. Studies show self-esteem is a positive indicator of future earnings.
