Peter Bocompani Mrs. Wasley AP Language and Composition 30 April 2024 “Hell Week” Reflection This past week, I descended into the deepest, darkest depths of hell, all while sitting in the same exact seat in my English class. This descent was characterized by the treacherous, arduous, misery-evoking task of being forced to complete three FRQs in a three-class span (not to mention the FRQ we completed last week). My writing experience consisted of stress, perseverance, and being put on the verge of insanity. It started with rhetorical analysis, my personal least favorite of the writing prompts, followed by argument, and finished with a splendid synthesis. Each of these prompts presented their own unique challenges, which I worked diligently to overcome, all while attempting to beat the clock. First, I will start with what I feel is the weakest of my three FRQs: my rhetorical analysis essay. For this prompt, we were given former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s 1997 commencement speech to the graduating class of Mount Holyoke College and asked to “write a well-developed essay in which you analyze the choices Albright makes to convey her message to her audience.” Generally speaking, I feel that analyzing writing for rhetoric and analyzing these specific rhetorical choices is one of my areas of struggle, and something that I have not done particularly well in the past. Due to these past struggles with rhetorical analysis, I went into the FRQ with a negative mindset and low confidence, which I wish I did not have, and it was something that most likely harmed me in the end.
