On June 27, 1880 Hellen Adams Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She was the first of 2 daughters. Her parents were Authur Keller and Katherine Keller. Authur Keller served as an officer in the Confederate army. Their family wasn’t rich most of their income came from their cotton plantation.(Bibliography.com)

Keller and her father went to baltimore to visit a specialist by the name of Dr.Chisolem. Dr. Chisolem recommended Keller see Dr. Bell, he was the inventor of the telephone and was also working with deaf children at the time. Bell suggest that they go visit the Perkins school for the blind located in Boston, Massachusetts. They met with the school director, who recommended Anne Sullivan , a recent graduate. The first lesson Sullivan taught was finger spelling, the first word was “doll”. “Other words would follow. At first, Keller was curious, then defiant, refusing to cooperate with Sullivan's instruction.” Sullivan could tell Keller was having a difficult time connecting the words and the objects, but she never gave up. As time went on Keller's tantrums got worse. Sullivan suggested to the rest of the family that Keller be separated and isolated from them for a while. They moved to a cottage that was located on the plantation together.
