Hemingway’s use of repetition helps to create a deep connection between the reader and characters, which allows one to see how the characters grow and develop as the plot goes on. It is no surprise that Hemingway decides to use the cab scene of both Chapter IV and XIX to demonstrate the way Jake’s and Brett’s relationships and characters have evolved since they are first seen together and in the end of the novel.
