Did you ever think that suffering from an appendix attack as a child could lead to greatness?
Henri Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambresis. In 1889 Matisse had an attack of appendicitis and while he was recovering, Matisse’s mother supplied him with art supplies to keep him busy. Initially he painted still lives and landscapes. As an art student he made copies of four of chard’s paintings. John Peter Russell had became Matisse’s teacher explaining the color theory to Matisse. He married Amelie in January of 1898. Amelie and Matisse ha two children of their own, Jean, born 1899, and Pierre, born 1900. He then turned to a new medium when painting and sculpting became a physcial challenge. He then began creating cut paper collages. He would cut sheets of paper into shapes of varying colors and sizes then arrange them to create lively compositions. Initially, the pieces were modest in size, but as time went on they transformed into murals or room-sized works.His first recorded use of the cut-out technique was in 1919 during the design of decor for the Le Chant du rossignol. Another group of cut-outs were made between 1937 and 1938. However, it was only after his operation that bedridden, Matisse began to develop the cut-out technique as his own form, rather than its prior utilitarian origin. He moved to the hilltop of fence n 1943, where he produced his first major cut-out project for his artists book titled Jazz. In 1948, Matisse began to prepare designs for the Chapelle du Rosare de Vence. Finishing his last painting in 1951, Matisse utilized the paper cut-out as his sole medium for expression up until his death. In 1952 Matisse established amueseum dedicated to his work, the Matisse museum in Le Cateau. Matisse’s final work was to design a stained-glass window installed at the Union Church of Pocantico Hills,
