What would happen if you had something taken from you and the person who took it profited from it, and never gave you credit? In Rebecca Skloot’s biography, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, we see the story of Henrietta Lacks, the woman behind the revolutionary HeLa cell. The story of Henrietta Lacks is one that is rather unknown, but the effect her cells had on the medical field is something known worldwide that has helped with an abundance of discoveries, therefore helping lots of people. Henrietta was diagnosed with cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and had the cancerous cells removed there along with radiation treatment. What she did not know was that the doctor removing the cells during her biopsy sent them to Doctor George Gey, who …show more content…
Moore's case is related to the Lacks case, with both cases having a cell line developed from them, but Henrietta never gave her consent for that to happen. The judge who decided the Moore case actually used the Lacks case as an example, “Ironically, in his [the judges] decision, the judge cited the HeLa cell line as a precedent for what happened with the Mo cell line. The fact that no one had sued over the growth or ownership of the HeLa cell line, he said, illustrated that patients didn’t mind when doctors took their cells and turned them into commercial products. (The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, 204)” We can see the connection made, but it is poorly mistaken as after this case, the Lacks family actually did sue over Henrietta's cells. The Lacks family never was informed of Henrietta's cells being used, including Henrietta herself. She never gave her consent for them to make a cell line out of the cells from her biopsy. This violated her human right of consent as she was never informed of anything ever being done with her
