Henry’s Plumbing and Pumps is an individually owned and operated small town business located in the town of Shelburne, Ontario. This business was founded by Henry Lamburtus in 1990 and has been successfully running ever since. The business started in the town of Orangeville, in a shop on Eldlewild street, where there was several people employed by Henry Lamburtus. When problems arose within the company, Henry downsized and moved his business to Shelburne, where he worked with fewer staff and from his shop at his home. From there, he finds his customers through his loyal customers and off of recommendation. He also has his company’s name and logo “Water your problems? We have a solution!” on the side of his plumbers van for extra advertising reasons. Henry’s weekly income varies greatly, but remains in the area of 1000-3000$ weekly. The small amount of people working for his company are all responsible for reporting to the manager, so the company is considered to have a small span of control. Centralization, the degree that decision making is concentrated, is also small because of the size of the company. The formal authority of the company is Henry. This also applies for the decentralization. The formalization of the company is low. Jobs are standardized based on what people can do and what they have done in the past to prove their skills in such job paths. All this means is that there is more freedom when working at Henry’s plumbing and Pumps.
The organizational design of the company is the simple structure. Henry’s company is run by a low degree of departmentalization, authority centered around one individual, and little formalization. This structure is very common in small businesses such as
