Title (Before Reading the poem) “Her kind,” is a poem by Anne Sexton. Prior to reading the poem, the title suggests that the poet is talking about the various types of women and how each woman is different from one another. The “her” in the title might be about a woman who has drifted away from the normal and traditional woman. She has set her own standards; therefore, creating her own kind of woman. This is about a woman who has been hunted down for committing “witchcraft,” and survived. She had been almost set on fire, ran over by carts, and had to hide out in the caves with the,”worms” and “elves,” for her protection. She has been a woman that was: misunderstood, a survivor, and a terrorizer of evil.

Her psychiatrist turned her to poetry as a form of calming therapy. Sexton was well known for writing poetry on womanhood and issues surrounding it, such as, menstruation and abortion, even to some extent adultery and masturbation. She suffered from severe depression and in some of her work refers her mental instability. Her poem, “Her kind,” was one of her several works, in which she refers to her mental illness. In 1967, she won the Pulitzer prize for her book, Live or Die. Although, Sexton had many accomplishments and a rather stable life, she still had many health issues.
