Heraclitus believed the world was in a constant, systematic state of change and although everything is in a ceaseless state of flux and change, the change is not merely just a random, haphazard occurrence. All change occurs in accordance with certain universal principles of reason. Heraclitus’s emphasize was on pattern, order and structure which were not based on physical objects but reason, also known as logos. Heraclitus believed in the cyclic recurrence of all things, including human life. He believed that the infinity of things and their changes could ultimately be related back to a single object, material, or idea; “The One and the Many.”

Through out our lessons we have heard many different quotes and sayings that made a big impact on our mind as well as in the way we are used to seeing our every day world. One of the most influential quotes by Heraclitus stated, “Into the same rivers we step in and we don’t step in we are and we are not”. This quote explains that the flowing river can never be stepped into exactly as it was previously because it is constantly moving and constantly changing. If one approaches the statement as saying that one is stepping into the same river just not the same water the interpretation will no longer be the same.
