Stepping forward, the viewer is greeted by a large linen canvas depicting a young man leaning by a vintage car in the back of someone’s backyard. The color schemes used in Hernan Bas’ Pink plastic lures are contrasting and somewhat unflattering with the reddish pink hues of the flamingos neighboring the dry grass. People might view his piece as strange because it’s not how they pictured Florida to be. Most think of palm trees, beaches and large mansions with swanky parties going on at night. As someone who is from Florida, the art definitely has some hidden values that a local would appreciate. Like any other tourist location, the locals that live there understand some of the hidden hardships that tourists won’t understand until they live there. The backyard has limited space but the occupant has the choice to add decorations as long as it meets the association’s guidelines and doesn’t annoy the neighbors next to them. Summer is brutal. Tourist’s that visit during the spring and winter don’t understand how intense the heat and humidity gets. Guesstimating what season it currently is in Bas’ painting, it’s possible that spring is now transitioning to summer. The reason being is, storms frequently form during that time period and that can be seen on the vintage car’s paint job. Grass also grows at a quick rate and people need to cut their lawns within two to three weeks. Also what sticks out the most is the damage done to the white flamingo. A lot of plastic flamingos lose a majority of their color and only slight red patches can be seen.
